Top 5 NES Sports Games of All Time
5) Double Dribble - I know that playing Double Dribble now seems completely prehistoric compared to modern basketball games. No real, players, teams, etc.. It's hard to tell which player you are. It's impossible to block a shot. Yap, yap, yap... People forget how much fun this game was though. Sure it was easy. But it was fun trying to beat the computer by triple digits. Also, the 3 point shot off the back board was unstoppable!!! You also got to admire those slam dunk cut scenes.
4) Blades of Steel - A real step up in sports gaming. You could make the argument that it's just as good as the famous EAs NHL games from the mid 1990s, with the obvious exception that Blades of Steel didn't use real players. But the gameplay was really smooth, even for those times. It really felt like you were on the ice.
3) Mike Tyson's Punch Out - What else needs to be said. I know it's not the slightest bit realistic, but its technically boxing. One of te hardest games to ever put down. You just wanted to keep playing just to see who the next boxer looked like. incredibly creative. Deserves to be on the list, just for coming up with a character like King Hippo.
2) Ice Hockey - I know this game isn't exactly revolutionary, but its just so charming. I love that some of the hockey players are short and stubby. Real simple controls, easy pick up and play fun. it's a shame that the game never got more credit.
1) Tecmo Bowl - When it comes to football there are only two periods you need to know about. Pre Tecmo Bowl and Post Tecmo Bowl. you can say what ever you want about the latest Madden games, but this was and will always be THE original. I don't know any kid who wasn't completely flipped out being able to play as Dan Marino, Jerry Rice, and of course the most unstoppable player in sports video game history BO JACKSON.
Simple and fun. You didn't memorize a playbook, like you do with most games today. Present developers should take note of this. They might need to go back in the vault to other NES video games to see that graphics aren't the only thing that matter in a video game.
