The Super Mario Bros. Series

Super Mario NES

What needs to be said about the Super Mario franchise. The games are like the "Citizen Kane" and "Godfather". They go beyond gaming and are a fixture as part of our pop culture.

The original Super Mario Brothers game came out in 1985. The day it hit the stores, the video game world would never be the same again. There would be non Nintendo, possibly no video game consoles, and possibly little mainstream interest in video games.

The game featured actual side scrolling levels. For the most part this was unheard of for video games for consoles. It had been tried but nowhere near as crisp as this. The character kept moving and the screen went with him. You couldn't wait to see what was up ahead.

Super Mario Bros holds the top spot on many "greatest games of all time" lists.

The original spawned two more games for the NES. Super Mario Bros. 2 was a departure from the original. Even looking back at all the Super Mario games that have come out on multiple Nintendo consoles Super Mario Brothers 2 is the one that looks like it doesn't fit. It doesn't take away from its greatness, but it is by far the most different of the mario games. The reason was that it was based off of a Japanese game Doki Doki Panic.

Super Mario Bros. 3, the last of the series for the NES was the perfect swan song. It took everything from the original and expanded on it in every possible way.
