Bionic Commando

Bionic Commando NES

Prior to Bionic Commando, the traditional platform game involved your basic "run n jump" style of gameplay. That all changed after the game came out in 1988. Instead of jumping from platform to platform, the lead character, Super Joe used a bionic arm which would grab on to ledges and swing him to and from platforms.

It was the kind game that wasn't an instant hit right away. It took NES gamers time to really appreciate this gem. Now, if you look at any "best of" lists for the NES you will find Bionic Commando on many of them.

The original game even had storyline based around defeating Hitler and the Nazi regime, but the story was scraped after it hit the US market, due to censorship issues. This shows how outside the box and original the idea of Bionic Commando was about.
